The Benefits of Cloud Hosting
A server died on me at 2am once, back when I still ran a couple of side projects on a single VPS from a budget host. Drive failure. No warning, just a downtime alert and a support queue that didn't open until 9. That's the whole pitch for cloud hosting in one bad night: your workload lives on one physical machine until it doesn't.
Cloud hosting fixes this by spreading your app across a pool of virtual servers a provider manages for you, so no single piece of hardware can take you down alone. Everything else people like about it, cheaper scaling, better uptime, less hands-on maintenance, comes out of that one architectural decision.
Scaling is usually the first thing people notice. On a dedicated box, outgrowing your server means ordering new hardware and migrating data, hoping nothing breaks along the way. On a cloud platform you resize or add a node through a dashboard. Still not instant. Still not free. But the migration step, the part that actually eats your week, mostly disappears.
Cost shifts shape too. Traditional hosting means buying enough capacity for your worst day and paying for it every other day of the month, even the quiet ones. Cloud pricing tracks usage, so a traffic spike costs more only while it's happening. You stop provisioning for a peak that shows up four days a year.
Redundancy is the part that actually saved me that night, eventually, once I switched providers. A single server failing takes down everything on it, and somebody has to notice, diagnose, and physically fix the box before service comes back. Cloud platforms route around failed hardware automatically. Your workload moves to something healthy, sometimes before you've even seen the alert.
There's also just less physical stuff to manage. Storage, compute, networking, all of it gets provisioned through a control panel instead of racked by hand. For a two-person team without an ops hire, that gap is the difference between running production infrastructure and not being able to.
None of this is specific to one company. AWS, DigitalOcean, Vultr, most of the providers you'll see compared on this site all give you some version of the same underlying advantages. What actually differs between them is pricing structure, what's bundled versus bolted on, and how good the day-to-day tooling is. Figuring out which of those fits your workload is a separate question, and the one worth spending your time on.
