Managed vs Unmanaged Hosting: What You're Actually Paying For

Two providers can offer what looks like the same server, similar CPU, similar RAM, similar storage, at wildly different prices. The gap is almost always managed services. Knowing what that label buys you is the difference between overpaying and underestimating what you're signing up to do yourself.

Unmanaged hosting gives you a server and stops there. Root access, a blank slate. Everything past that, OS updates, security patches, firewall rules, monitoring, backups, software installs, is on you. It's cheaper because you're doing the work a sysadmin would otherwise handle. It's also unforgiving. A missed patch or a misconfigured firewall is entirely your problem, and there's nobody to call at 2am.

Managed hosting folds that operational work into the price. The provider patches the OS, watches uptime, handles backups, and often gives you actual support staff rather than a status page. For WordPress specifically, "managed" usually means staging environments, automatic core and plugin updates, and caching tuned to WordPress's own performance quirks.

Which one you want depends on what you've already got in-house. A team with real infrastructure chops usually gets more value from unmanaged: lower cost, full control, and the ability to actually use that control. A solo site owner without that background is generally better off paying for managed, because the savings from going unmanaged evaporate the first time a security issue sits unpatched for months because nobody was watching.

There's a middle tier worth knowing about too. Platforms like Cloudways layer a managed control panel over unmanaged cloud infrastructure from DigitalOcean, AWS, or similar. You get much of managed hosting's convenience at closer-to-raw-cloud pricing, with one extra layer between you and the underlying provider.

If you're still not sure which side you're on, ask a blunter question. If a critical patch needed applying tonight, would you know it existed, and would you apply it? A "no" answer tells you more than any spec sheet.
