The full cost of running a workload, including infrastructure, add-ons, support, and the engineering time to operate it, well beyond the sticker price.
Total cost of ownership is the honest number: everything it takes to run a workload, well past the line item on the invoice. Infrastructure is only part of it. Add the egress fees and IP charges, the backup storage, the support plan, and, the piece people always forget, the engineering hours spent operating the thing. A cheap unmanaged VPS that eats ten hours a month of your time may cost more than managed hosting once you price that time.
This is where the intro-versus-renewal and managed-versus-unmanaged decisions actually resolve. A $2.99 shared plan renewing at $18 has a different TCO than the sticker implies. An unmanaged Hetzner box is cheap in dollars and expensive in attention. Kinsta at $35/mo looks pricey next to a raw VM until you count the operations it removes.
The useful habit is to compare the whole setup you'll really run, over the term you'll really run it, including your own time at some honest rate. The cheapest host on the pricing page and the cheapest way to run your project are frequently not the same thing.
