Region
A geographic location where a provider operates data centers. Choosing one near your users cuts latency, and spreading across them adds resilience.
A region is a geographic area where a provider runs data centers, like Frankfurt, Virginia, or Singapore. Which region your servers sit in is one of the biggest choices you make, because it sets the physical distance between your users and your compute, and distance is latency you can't optimize away. Host near your audience and everything feels faster.
Region count and placement vary a lot between providers, and it's a real differentiator. The hyperscalers and Vultr blanket the globe with dozens of locations. AWS Lightsail and Oracle Cloud offer wide reach. Hetzner concentrates in Europe with limited US presence, which is a genuine consideration if your users are American. Regions also underpin resilience and compliance. Spreading across regions survives a whole location going down, and data-residency rules, keeping EU user data in the EU, often dictate which region you must use. For most projects, though, the first job is simply picking the one closest to your people.
