Hyperscaler
One of the giant cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) operating global data centers and hundreds of services at massive scale.
Hyperscaler is the industry's shorthand for the three giants: AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Oracle Cloud and Alibaba Cloud sit adjacent. They run data centers on every populated continent and sell hundreds of services, from plain VMs to managed machine-learning pipelines.
The strength is breadth and reach. If you need a specific database engine, a region in São Paulo, and a compliance certification, a hyperscaler has all three. The weakness is complexity and cost opacity: the pricing calculators are notorious, egress fees bite, and it's easy to wire together forty services you'll spend a year understanding.
For a lot of teams, a focused provider like DigitalOcean, Hetzner, or Vultr does the job with a tenth of the cognitive load. The hyperscalers earn their keep at scale, under compliance pressure, or when you genuinely need the exotic services.
